  3. It's actually sort of an empowering story! "We don't have to be stuck in a bed just because a doctor says so." (Oh, but it's a joke, right? So does that mean that the opposite is meant to be true? Hmm.)

Anyway, I have a friend who does long-distance running, has a blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do, and is going hiking in Nepal for the entire month of May, and she says she could NEVER give birth without pain medication, because she's heard how bad it is, and she knows she couldn't cope and doesn't want to experience it, no matter the risks that might be associated with pain relief (i.e., shut up, Lynette, because I don't believe you and you'll never change my mind). I'm sure if I sent this little story to her she would NOT find it amusing.

  4. well the joke certainly IS on us-- after all it's a caricature of the stereotype of the natural childbirth philosophy... Rixa herself is no stranger to drawing parallels btw marathons and birthing hee hee

  5. Hmmm...she slipped into an "underarmor HOSPITAL GOWN"?? Joke or not...that particular line strikes me. Besides, I'm not so sure I like the poking fun of birth outside of hospital one way or another. I think maybe it lends a bad name to anybody birthing outside a hospital. Then again, maybe I'm just sensitive...
