ReplyDeleteI originally got discouraged with cloth diapering; changing a newborn so often made me give up, and the last thing I needed during recovery from birth was another load of laundry. But, now, diaper changes are longer in between, and it is SO worth the extra load of laundry. Economically, environmentally, etc.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite cloth tip is to buy preemie diapers if your having your first baby. Even if they only fit for the first couple days/weeks..you'll appreciate having something that fits RIGHT!

ReplyDeletePocket diapers like FuzziBunz are great because they allow you to easily add extra inserts to customize the absorbency (esp. for night time). We use a couple of hemp inserts and a prefold in a pocket diaper to get us through half the night.

ReplyDeleteMy tip would be: do not use regular detergent (even the free and clear kind) - after 6 months my son's diapers stank from the detergent build-up...
I have just ordered Charlie's soap and I am crossing my fingers that it will get rid of the stink.
I have never used fuzzi bunz on my own children, but have changed other children who use them and I really like them. I am contemplating using them on our new baby this June.

ReplyDeleteIf your diapers have detergent build-up (skunky or cheesy smelling and not very absorbent) a vinegar rinse in hot water should sort you out!
ReplyDeleteI'm new to cloth diapers and have sewn all mine! I have prefolds, AIO's and pockets. I have found that with two uncirc'd boys that the pockets work very well with wicking moisture away and that way less chance for any infections. Plus they look cute in the colors!!! I've also used snaps and touchtape. I like the snaps for my older who can't get it open!

ReplyDeleteWith my first, the small sized FBs I bought were too small so I used disposables for 2-3 weeks. With my second newborn, I wanted to avoid disposables entirely. If I had known about this beforehand, I wouldn't have bought newborn prefolds and covers. You can covert a small FB to a newborn diaper by wrapping a birdeyes flat diaper onto the baby and then layering the FB over it. The flat diaper provided just enough bulk to start using the FB right away.
Ok, I did a lot of homework on these things over 3 years ago when our son was just ity bity (if you can call 10lbs ity bity) to try to find the best cloth diaper solution for us... we loved the fuzzibunz. Now, I have turned another friend on to them... so if I win then her little girl will get a brand new fuzzi instead of just borrowing our (now old style) fuzzi's. Thanks for the great contest/giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI love that pocket diapers are so customizable! We have a huge stash of inserts, so our daytime stuffing is different from nap stuffing, and night stuffing is the fluffiest of all. Try getting that kind of customization out of a disposable diaper!!!

I can imagine that if I had a newborn and discovered that the CDs didn't fit, I'd be too overwhelmed to find a solution and would just ask my husband to run out and get some disposables. I love Fuzzi Bunz. I have been using them since my now 14 month old was 2 months. I have two tips:
ReplyDelete1. I wrap a microfiber car wash towel (cheap at Target or Walmart) around the insert and then stuff for extra absorbancy at night. My daughter nurses all night (literally) and we have no leaks!
2. I use a Viva paper towel as a liner to catch solid poop. Then there is no shaking, dunking or rinsing.

ReplyDeleteMy tip: if your hemp inserts start to get stinky, soak them in a mix of water and hydrogen peroxide. I use half a bottle of peroxide plus enough water to cover them. Let soak for a while-couple hours? Then wash as usual. Works for other inserts too, but I've noticed the stink on the hemp ones more often.

My favorite tip for cloth diapers is that when babies are completely breastfed, their stools are so loose no rinsing of diapers is needed (for Chinese prefolds atleast) just throw them in the washer!

ReplyDeleteMy tip...Don't forget about cloth wipes if you are going to cloth diaper! You can easily make your own or buy cheap washcloths, or buy them cheaply online. They work so much better than disposable wipes, and you can use plain water (or make a solution if you want), so baby's delicate bum is not inundated with commercial wipe chemicals :)

Do you have any tips for keeping the velco tabs stuck together in the wash so that they don't connect diaper to diaper and cause extra wear and tear? They are supposed to stay connected inside the diaper but mine end up forming a long chain of diapers.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite tip is to invest in a diaper sprayer aka mini-shower. It has made a huge difference for me--no dunking and swishing, no touching poo, just spray off the diaper and drop it in the pail. It makes things quick, easy, and clean. :)
ReplyDeleteI've used WAHM diapers that are similar to the old FB style, but never an official FB. I had heard that the old FBs their elastic would wear out really fast, so I opted to go with something else. These new one-size ones look really nice though, and I would LOVE to try them!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite CD tip isn't about the diapers themselves, it's about the wipes. Buy a yard of patterned flannel and then cut it into large squares or rectangles with pinking shears. No need to sew anything, pour a wipe solution like LuSa over them, and just wash along with your diapers. So easy and makes throw-away wipes redundant.

ReplyDeleteI have found that with prefolds combined with covers, honestly, you really do not need pins or even Snappis. I also don't even do any origami-ish folding pattern - I literally fold them in thirds and put them inside a cover. That's it!
(After much experimentation, I use a combo of prefolds with covers and pocket diapers.)

I have used both pins and snappis in diapering 3 kids, and both have their place. I like snappis for their speed when you get to the stage where baby won't hold still. I like pins for cover-free diapering for more air flow (like when they have a rash.

We used Knickernappies and BumGenius with my daughter, but decided to use FuzziBunz with my son and we LOVE them. They are much easier to stuff than the Knickernappies and softer than the BumGenius and they contain those breastmilk poops like nobody's business. My tip: we use water softener to strip our diapers of detergent residue every few months.

I love FuzziBunz! To prevent diapers with velcro closures from getting stuck to other diapers, I close then like you would when you are diapering and them flip them inside out. Works great!

ReplyDeleteFB are GREAT! My best cloth diaper tip is that if you don't LOVE the diapers you're using, buy a few more different kinds to find the ones you DO love. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out which ones you mesh with. Some people think they just aren't the "cloth" cut!! When really, they just don't like the type of diaper they're using - there are SO many different kinds available for us now - branch out and find one that suits YOU!

I always thought that using MORE soap would get the diapers cleaner...wrong...my first set of diapers got soooo clogged up with soap that they stopped absorbing. So now I know, only use 1 TBS...and I love cloth diapering.

ReplyDeleteI'm expecting my first and have started the process of collecting a combo of fuzzibuns and bumgenius (all gifts and loaners at this point). Since I'm new to this, my question is how many do I need? I have 12, but fear that might not last more than a day before each wash load.
ReplyDeleteFuzzi Bunz are my favorite! A couple of tips:
ReplyDeleteJanie, cloth wipes are definitely the way to go. You can throw all of your dirty diapering supplies into the same bag, and we've found them to be much more efficient than disposable wipes.
Rachel, when we're on the road, we carry a wet bag that zippers shut and put all of our wet or dirty diapers in that.
Jessica, when our baby got really squirmy, we switched from prefolds to pockets as we find pockets easier to put on when he just won't stay still. Prefolds weren't really much more work at when he was younger, once we got our technique down.
Jenna and Sarah, we had about 36prefolds and 8 covers when he was a newborn, which was probably overkill but allowed us to go a couple days between washes if we wanted. We were also using the prefolds as burp cloths, FWIW. Now that he's 7 months old, we're pretty happy with 18 pockets (for daytime) and a few prefolds and hemp doublers (for nighttime, as he's a heavy wetter and a double-stuffed pocket isn't enough for us).

ReplyDeletePefolds and covers are actually just as easy as pocket diapers and AIOs for me! They are less of a hassle to wash (because you don't have to be as careful) and they are CHEAP.
I use Indian prefolds and Thirsties covers (Thirsties are THE BEST--never had a leak, EVER!) with Snappis. You don't have to use a Snappi, but I've found that when I don't the diaper cover gets soiled more often. When I'm leaving the baby with a sitter, I always leave FuzziBunz because they are much easier for a sitter to figure out and they don't have to worry about anything (prefolds really aren't hard--but they just intimidate people). I also use FuzziBunz at night with an extra insert -- they are very absorbent and keep baby happy for 8 hours!

You will need way more than 12 diapers unless you want to do laundry every single day! Newborns will go through at least 10-12 diapers a day and BumGenius and FuzziBunz take a while to dry, so you won't have any diapers to put on your baby while they're washing and drying if you don't buy more. Here's what I have, and I do laundry every 2-3 days:
4 Thirsties covers
25 Indian prefolds
4 Fuzzi Bunz
3 Snappis
3 Hemp Babies doublers
40 or so cloth wipes
my advice is to be relaxed about it.

then, when you figure out what you like (we're a 95% prefolds + thirsties wraps) get a large enough stash that you can be calm about washing when you have the chance (i have 30 prefolds and 5 covers + about 6 AIO/AI2s).

ReplyDeleteI use Oxyclean to get bright orange breast-fed poo stains out of my prefolds and inserts. I have found that if I use Oxyclean on covers or pocket all-in-ones the heat from the oxygen damages the plastic.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite covers are wool wraps. They are a little more work with the upkeep but they don't need to be washed as often. I also like that they are breathable and cause less diaper rash!

I'm curious about trying cloth diapering but I've read that they really aren't that environmentally friendly when you account for the extra laundry water, toilet flushing, detergent, sewage processing, and electricity (for those of us who don't have room to line dry). I know it means no diapers in landfills, but does that offset the negatives? Anyone have some data for either side of the argument?

When you cloth diaper, how do you deal with poopy diapers? If the poop is solid, I see how you just put it in the toilet, but what if it's messy? What do you wipe with, etc?

ReplyDeleteMy cloth diapering tip: expensive detergents are not necessary. I use All Free & Clear and have no problems with smell or rashes. If the diapers start to stink run white vinegar in the rinse cycle.
