Upcoming book reviews
I have a lineup of books waiting to be reviewed. I've enjoyed all of them and look forward to finding the time to write up my thoughts about them. The reviews will appear in roughly this order:
Dear Rixa,
ReplyDeletePlease send me the Making Babies book as soon as possible. I could use it. And wouldn't it be fun to include a "Does it really work?" section in your review? Shift that book to the bottom of your list and I'll have it back to you before you're ready to write the review.
Love,
Katy
Katy,
ReplyDeleteIf you send me a few dollars for shipping, I'd be happy to lend it to you! I'd also love to include your thoughts about it once you've read it and tried it out.
As my little people would say, "My pants are dancing!" Deal!
ReplyDeleteI just saw Get Me Out the other day at the bookstore and it's on my list of books to read.
ReplyDeleteI'll be interested to hear what you thought.
I read "Lady's Hands, Lion's Heart" last year and found it both absolutely fascinating and horribly depressing (I found it to be very dark). However, it's well worth the read and contains great stories and fascinating history (the beginning of MANA, for example). Look forward to seeing what you think of all of them!
ReplyDeleteI'm curious to read your thoughts on "Get Me Out"; I read a review of it yesterday by a normal book reviewer. It sounds like it ends on a, "now childbirth is super safe and the discussion is over" note. It also seemed to me like it would be a rehash of Tina Cassidy's book. I'd love to read Epstein's work, but I'm not sure if I want to invest money in an iffy book!
ReplyDeleteI've read Birth Day - I liked it.
ReplyDelete@Veronica--I just finished reading Get Me out and need to type my review. It was definitely NOT a rehash of Birth by Tina Cassidy, nor was it a duplicate of the recent Birth Day by Mark Sloan. (I was expecting it to be both, especially because the cover is so much like Birth.) It stood alone and was very in was how to covers history that includes the present day--so, sperm banking, surrogate pregnancies, egg freezing, etc. This is what makes it stand apart from the other birth history books. It also has a chapter about unassisted childbirth. The book tends to be more "mainstream" than other types of birth books I enjoy, but I found it good. I got the review copy for free though, so I'm not sure if I would have paid full price for it. Perhaps the library?
ReplyDeleteThe ending is more about the increasing complexity of parenting and birth and how while we might want to control everything about it, it is ultimately "not completely manageable."
Hope that helps!
Molly
I just checked out Birth Day from my library! I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on it. The breastfeeding book sounds interesting as well.
