Museum day

Almost all of the museums in Nice are now free. We took advantage of this today and explored the Palais Lascaris and the Musée Masséna.

The Palais Lascaris is in the middle of vieux Nice. We never even knew it was there. From the outside, it looks like any other old Niçois building. It has a collection of old musical instruments: pianos, harps, violins, guitars. Some of them are still used for concerts held in the Palais.

The main floor had this old apocethary. Pretty cool.
The kids had a hoot running around. We tried, unsucessfully, to keep them quiet.
Inspecting old war medals.
"Plus fait douceur que violence" (Gentleness accomplishes more than violence)
Dio had a temper tantrum
Calming down
All better
Looking cute in her Heidi braids
While Dio was taking his afternoon nap, Zari and I went to the Musée Masséna, which is right next to the opulent Hotel Negresco. The museum is situated in an ornate villa with beautiful gardens. The scale of the place was more palatial than villa-like.
We smelled the roses on the way out.

  2. Just have to ask---why do you think children running through museums is acceptable, let alone laudable, behaviour? Museums are not parks for children to run in, nor for them to tantrum in.

  3. I consider it wonderful that you have the opportunity and energy to expose your children to such a wide variety of cultural and educational experiences. What a rich and fulfilling childhood they will have experienced! Museums are absolutely appropriate places for children to be, and I can attest that, as the mother of three boys, some well controlled rapid steps are perfectly harmless, and actually help mitigate misbehavior by allowing an outlet for that boundless energy children have (which we are frequently jealous of!!).

    Good for you.

  4. p.s.
Lisa would do well to consider
"Plus fait douceur que violence" in her words and attitudes towards children.

  5. Amen Melissa. Lisa, tantrums are as predictible as the weather. Sudden strong storms may spring up.

  6. I love free museums! One of the most striking things I recall from some book in my past (Les Mis, perhaps?), is the role that access to museums plays in educating a public. I think one of NYC's greatest shames is their lack of free museums. I understand the funding issues intrinsic to such a proposition, but find the public good outweighing the taxpayer expense.

  7. It looks like you had a wonderful day - in spite of the tantrum. I love taking Monkey to museums; he always has the most interesting observations & interests!
