Birth around the World: MamaBaby Haiti

MamaBaby Haiti is a new non-profit organization run by naturopathic doctors and midwives to serve Haitian women and babies.
MamaBaby Haiti is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and well being of mothers and babies. Our mission is to lower the maternal, fetal, and neonatal mortality rate in Haiti. MamaBaby Haiti is formed by a group of midwives and naturopathic doctors who serve women and families out of their birthing center and clinic in Haiti. They provide free prenatal, birth, postpartum, and pediatric care, in addition to education and other life saving services.
MamaBaby Haiti is opening a birth center in Cap Haitian in early November 2010. You can see pictures of the center, mid-construction, from earlier this year. I love the organization's vision for how the birth center will function within the community.

As you might have heard, there is a cholera outbreak in Haiti. MamaBaby Haiti is accepting supplies (IV fluids and electrolyte replacement powders) and cash donations. They are sending 14 volunteers to Haiti in the next few weeks. To donate, contact:
Patricia Couch, CPM, LDM
Telephone: 503-487-7683

You can follow MamaBaby Haiti on Facebook.

  1. I'm so glad you posted about this! I personally know a couple of midwives who are leaving from Utah soon to help staff the birth center. There's a local doctor going with them as well. It's such a good cause, and we need to get as much support as possible :)

  2. The owner of the birth center I went to is the one who started this up. She has two facilities open in the Portland, OR area, Andaluz Waterbirth Center. We frequently get updates on the progress and people volunteer to staff the facility from the Yahoo group that is run for families who have gone to Andaluz. They do auctions a lot to raise money. I got to see a bunch of pictures of the construction still going on there as well as information from the surrounding villages. They've been interviewing people to find out the greatest needs of the area and seeing what they can do beyond helping women to have safe, healthy births. Great bunch of people!

  3. I've been lurking here for a while and this post moved me to comment...

Thanks for including this. I've looked them up on facebook and really think this is an organization worth supporting.

Kudos to you as well for your lovely blog posts.... a nice mix of personal and professional. Keep up the good work! (PS - I've especially enjoyed the series on birth around the world - other cultures' way of doing this most natural of things is so fascinating to me!)
