The Birthingown is an Empire-waist wraparound dress in a soft, curve-hugging rayon/lycra jersey. It crosses over in the back, rather than the front, allowing for anesthesia access without requiring the woman to disrobe. Unlike typical hospital gowns, which don't even come close to covering a woman's backside--especially when she's walking and swaying--the Birthingown's generous knee-length wraparound design keeps everything fully covered. ReplyDeleteI visited the website to check it out and I have to say I think it's absolutely gorgeous! Love that there is color variety to pick from (another thing lacking in hospital gowns), it looks super comfy and the snappy shoulders would make nursing a breeze!

I love this! My favorite feature is the soft stretchy fabric. Regular hospital gowns have no stretch and give no freedom for movement. I remember always being tangled up and stuck in mine while in labor.

I wore a hideous 2XL bright yellow steelband t-shirt laboring around my own house and going to the hospital. It was one of the few things that fit. Now I hate the way I look in those pics!

I'd love to emerge from the birth pool & hot shower and slip into this rather than an ill-fitting pair of yoga pants and oversized t-shirt. The ability to flip the shoulder down to nurse is awesome.

I love the nursing access while it still has wide straps; also the stretch to allow for freedom of movement. I actually just spent last night trying to find a postpartum type gown that was somewhat flattering, not sagging and exposing my chest, comfy, and easy to nurse in.... having a hard time finding it. One thing I'm wondering about (or would maybe suggest since I couldn't see for sure if the gown has this feature) is to have the nursing flap adjustable for those of us oddballs who don't seem to ever grow large boobs in pregnancy or breastfeeding :)I know we're rare, but we do exist, LOL. Which explains my aforementioned problem with the sagging, chest exposing clothing in maternity AND nursing clothing. They're just not made for "us".

As an LD nurse and Birthing From Within mentor, I think this gown is WONDERFUL! I frequently talk to moms in class about wearing their own clothes in labor to maintain their sense of identity and control over their own choices. I showed this gown to my manager and she also loved it. She is looking into finding funding to provide these to women in our hospital, but that will probably not be possible until next year.
ReplyDeleteAs a first time expectant mama who is anxious about giving birth (the most private and intimate thing I will ever do) in my workplace, along with whatever colleges happen to be there that day, I think a gown like this would be helpful in giving me a sense of privacy that doesn't make me feel like a "patient" who is under the control and rules of the institution.

I am a midwife expecting my first February 29th. Unfortunately, I am not giving birth at home, but in a large institution. I would love a gown like this because it would allow me to feel more like myself (an individual) rather than a generic patient covered in the same scratchy gown. Also, they took our nursing gowns away 2/2 to cost at the hospital.

ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say that I absolutely LOVE the idea of such a lovely article of clothing. I gave birth to my daughter 5 months ago, and my son 3 years ago. I consider myself a relatively modest person, and my husband is EXTREMELY modest. However, I walked around the hospital room and gave birth to my children completely naked. It was either a hospital gown, or my birthday suit. I went for the more practical (and more comfortable) option. If only I had one of these, I could have felt a little less vulnerable. The nurses kept asking me over and over if I wanted to "put on my gown yet", and most of the time I kept ignoring them. If I wanted to wear the damn gown, it would have been on my body already!
