Birthingown Giveaway!

When I was at the Lamaze conference this fall, I met the creators of the Birthingown. Finally, a maternity gown that's as beautiful as it is functional! Designed by a L&D nurse, this dress makes the laboring woman feel beautiful and works with any kind of birth--from active & unmedicated to high-intervention.

The Birthingown is an Empire-waist wraparound dress in a soft, curve-hugging rayon/lycra jersey. It crosses over in the back, rather than the front, allowing for anesthesia access without requiring the woman to disrobe. Unlike typical hospital gowns, which don't even come close to covering a woman's backside--especially when she's walking and swaying--the Birthingown's generous knee-length wraparound design keeps everything fully covered. Each shoulder flap opens to allow easy access for skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding, as well as IV/BP lines. The top of the gown is fully lined.

Just imagine if you arrived at L&D and the nurse greeted you with your choice of Birthingown, rather than those frumpy hospital gowns!

  1. I like that this gown includes those design elements necessary at the hospital (especially the snaps on the shoulder straps) while being feminine and (I would expect) extremely comfortable.

Caption for the johnny gowns: We took a security envelope, turned it inside out, and voila, your "privates" stay private!

  2. I love that it's a wrap-around and it covers well - so much better than a swimsuit or hospital gown. I wore my mumu during labor last time, and this is so much prettier.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I am an expectant mom and a doula, and I think the most appealing thing about the gown is that it covers your backside! I've seen so many women fuss with the silly strings on standard hospital gowns, trying to keep them closed when walking or moving around. What a great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'm also an expecting mom :) "Due" next month!

    ReplyDelete
  5. it is so pretty and feminine!

    ReplyDelete
  6. A second thought, since I'm pregnant: I would wear a birthingown on more occasions than just when in labor--the functionality and visual appeal will make it great for new mamahood!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'm 35 weeks preggers, and would love this! I'll post again!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Jessica again here at 35 weeks...I love the ease of skin to skin contact with those gown. Brilliant!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I was on the fence about having a fourth baby, but after seeing this I might have too! This is gorgeous. I love the snap openings for nursing. As a mom who is still nursing this would be great for anytime though.

    ReplyDelete
  10. for the caption...

"psst... can you casually glance and check and make sure my cheeks are not exposed, they are not paying me enough for a nude shoot!"

  11. Love the cut and practicality. Would love to have this next time at a home birth.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I am expecting in April. :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. I love the simple desgin and easy access for nursing!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Love this! It looks so comfortable and yet practical, would love to have one of these for my next birth, I had a lot of trouble finding something to wear that covered me yet didn't irritate me to wear, need to focus on having a baby, not on clothing!

    ReplyDelete
  15. JUST found out I am expecting #2!! Would LOVE to win this gown!!!
I visited the website to check it out and I have to say I think it's absolutely gorgeous! Love that there is color variety to pick from (another thing lacking in hospital gowns), it looks super comfy and the snappy shoulders would make nursing a breeze!
    As for the caption:
"I told him I wanted him to put the gown on too so he could be with me during my tubal ligation. Little does he know he's in for a vasectomy instead!"

I love, love the design that allows for going from being covered to skin to skin in a very short amount of time. And it's so pretty!

  17. My favorite part about the gown is that it's beautiful!!! I would love to wear this!

  19. In reference to the hospital gown

"These have fantastic vents to keep your backside cool"...yeah, ugh.

Also: Very Pregnant right now. :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. What I like best about the gown (outside of the color combos & the ingenious design) is that it looks like something a normal person would wear.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm also expecting - baby #2 is almost half-way done! :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love that the gowns are beautiful but still totally functional!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Also, I am pregnant with baby number 3, planning for VBAC number 2 in March!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Beautiful gown...and fabulous idea. I am a doula and a mama and would've given ANYTHING for one of these for my births. Fabulous idea. How empowering to all birthing women. Thank you for creating this.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love that it provides coverage and comfort, while still making it easy to actually give birth in! Oh, and it's PRETTY!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh, and I'm expecting a baby girl in March :) I WANT ONE OF THESE!!!

  29. Hi,
I'm 34 weeks pregnant and was looking for good ideas on what to wear during labor; this birthing gown looks good, will enable skin-to-skin easily as I wasn't sure how the hospital gowns would work without being undressed, at least the top part. In short, would love to have it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Also, this is my first baby and I benefited immensely from your blog. Thank you for all.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm newly pregnant with baby #1, though I've been reading your blog for a long time. I'm just now starting to research all the new stuff I'm going to need for baby AND me, and the Birthingown is going on the list.

I love that it wouldn't make you feel "medical", meaning like a piece of hospital equipment. The gowns they have at our hospital are frumpy and just the thought of them make me not look forward to wearing them!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Bri Sutherland12/17/11, 11:48 PM

I am also an expectant mom, due with our first on May 19th!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Pregnant women are so beautiful and they should be able to feel that way during labor, too. I love the great coverage with this gown combined with the easy access. I'll be happy to recommend these as a doula and hope to win one to wear myself when our #2 arrives in
    May!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love this! My favorite feature is the soft stretchy fabric. Regular hospital gowns have no stretch and give no freedom for movement. I remember always being tangled up and stuck in mine while in labor.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am an expecting mom and would LOVE to win this. :). I am hoping for a natural vbac this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  37. "Hey Buddy, look at the back of my gown and you can see why they call it I.C.U.". :P

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like the combination of coverage and accessibility.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Baby girl is coming in April!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I really like that it looks like a real woman's clothing and not a hospital clone gown.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I am expecting a baby this spring, my 8th born. I've been trying to figure out what to wear this time around. I'd much rather wear something other than hospital wear...

    ReplyDelete
  42. A gown even a granny could wear. Underwear not included.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Without knowing there was a caption contest for the hospital gown photo, my husband remarked, "Woah, is that a sympathy gown for the husband to wear while his wife is in labor?"

    ReplyDelete
  44. I visited the Birthing Gown website. I really like that it is made of jersey--sounds super comfy!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I am expecting--and have been wondering what I am going to wear to the birthing center. This would be perfect! :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. "Psst...honey, does this outfit make my butt look big?"

    ReplyDelete
  47. SO much to love...the design is cute, the fabric sounds amazing, love the sleevelessness because I was SO overheated when birthing my son...and best of all it means not having to design/make my own!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Also, expecting our second son around the beginning of April. Would love to give birth in one of these!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I am due january 14th and this is something I've been thinking about- I don't want to wear another hospital gown.
What I love most is that there aren't those creepy openings in the front for breast feeding!! Those things make me so paranoid that I'm going to flash everyone- which is ironic because if I'm nursing I don't care who sees

    ReplyDelete
  50. Since I'm pregnant, I'm posting two...
The other thing I LOVE- When I was in labor last time the nurses were trying to preserve my dignity by wrapping me in sheets- annoying! It made it hard to walk and I didn't really care anyway. I'd rather put on something cute like this that goes on and off easily and won't trip me.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I would love to win a birthing gown. I am due in 3 weeks. I would love to feel modest and covered up during labor.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I am expecting my second child in 3 weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  53. My sister in law would love this! She's due in 2 months.

  54. Caption: We're in this together.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Caption: "Maybe if I keep my knees tightly together the back of this gown will stay closed, and I can maintain this forced smile until the photographer is done."

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love that it is stretchy and covers your ass...ets. I plan on moving around a lot and I hated the uncomfortable gown I labored in with my daughter. I also love that it's pretty.... I wore a hideous 2XL bright yellow steelband t-shirt laboring around my own house and going to the hospital. It was one of the few things that fit. Now I hate the way I look in those pics!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I am expecting a little girl around the first week of may, too :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Caption: "The fact that it's unisex is not a feature used often on the L&D floor, but you never know. Designed for a man, but I guess you can put it on women too!"

    ReplyDelete
  59. Not currently expecting (although planning to TTC this year)... I really like that the gown looks like *gasp* clothes!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm a homebirth mom, but this looks like it would be an amazing postpartum outfit to jump into that first time you climb into bed with baby for a snooze. I'd love to emerge from the birth pool & hot shower and slip into this rather than an ill-fitting pair of yoga pants and oversized t-shirt. The ability to flip the shoulder down to nurse is awesome.

Would also be lovely in case of necessary hospital transfer. Looks easy to slip on and you could feel a little more human upon admittance not having to slip into one of those scratchy hospital-issue "gowns."

    ReplyDelete
  61. Also, I'm expecting! :) Due mid-February and planning my second homebirth.

    ReplyDelete
  62. p.s. Can I get an extra entry for letting you know that Solstice falls on 12/22 this year rather than 12/21? :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. This is beautiful! I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  64. And if you haven't heard the gossip yet, I am pregnant, due in May.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I like the empire waist, and the pretty design. I feel like if I wore this during the early postpartum days, it would make a more pleasant experience. I have another maternity gown, and it's pretty much shaped like a tent. Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Also, I'm an expectant mama (for the third time). I'm giving birth at home in Arizona in June, and this would be nice to wear and stay relatively cool. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  67. I like the easy access for nursing! I was going to say I like that you could wear it immediately postpartum, but it might get a little messy....

    ReplyDelete
  68. Also, pregnant here too. Baby expected to make a debut sometime in March.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Caption: "hey baby.... your hospital room, or mine?"

    ReplyDelete
  70. Wow, those are beautiful, I would love to be able to birth in something that is pretty and allows me to be comfortable:)

    ReplyDelete
  71. I like how the neckline is actually flattering.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Also, due in March.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'd love to use this for my next babe. I think the shoulder straps are genius.

Happy Holidays and grateful thanks, Cindy

  75. I absolutely LOVE the "snap" shoulder feature & the fact that the gown is made from jersey. This will be super comfy to wear during birth. What a great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I love the nursing access while it still has wide straps; also the stretch to allow for freedom of movement. I actually just spent last night trying to find a postpartum type gown that was somewhat flattering, not sagging and exposing my chest, comfy, and easy to nurse in.... having a hard time finding it. One thing I'm wondering about (or would maybe suggest since I couldn't see for sure if the gown has this feature) is to have the nursing flap adjustable for those of us oddballs who don't seem to ever grow large boobs in pregnancy or breastfeeding :)I know we're rare, but we do exist, LOL. Which explains my aforementioned problem with the sagging, chest exposing clothing in maternity AND nursing clothing. They're just not made for "us".

    ReplyDelete
  78. Expecting a new LO in January :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. I love that it is easy to nurse in just like the hospital gowns...except cuter!

  91. I love that this gown gives is nursing access while still being a full dress. I hate the hospital gowns and always feel half naked in them. It looks like it could also be great for the postpartum period and beyond!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Expecting #2 in May :)

    ReplyDelete
  93. I love the feminine details like empire waist, little bow & 2 tone colours, but my favourite aspect is that you can open it up for skin to skin contact after birth.

    Caption for photo:
Beauty and the Beast(No, not the husband...the hideous hospital gown).

    ReplyDelete
  94. It looks very comfortable, nothing hospital staff can object to and covers what needs to be covered when you are an active laborer and tend towards modesty.

    ReplyDelete
  95. PS. And I am expecting, due in April with #10.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Anything that makes me feel like a woman, not a patient, while giving birth gets a big thumbs up from me! I had fertility problems and had to wear hideous hospital gowns for SO MANY procedures before I got pregnant!

    ReplyDelete
  97. just found out last week that i'm expecting my first....and am already thinking about what i'd wear during my homebirth...this seems super comfortable, love the access up top!

    ReplyDelete
  98. another entry from me, due next august! just visited my sister in law in the hospital after the birth of my nephew and seeing her struggle with that gown while she was trying to breastfeed just about broke my heart...here's to birthing clothing that actually makes sense.

  99. It's great that the gown is designed to open at the front instead of back and that it's feminine rather than utilitarian. I'd be afraid to ruin it, but I guess most stuff will just wash out!

  101. This is brilliant. Love the snap shoulder for nursing/skin to skin. And oh, to not feel naked and fuss with those strings that you never know which ones tie to which!

    ReplyDelete
  102. I'm 28 weeks pregnant, would love to win this!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I love that it doesn't look frumpy and has those nice snaps on the straps... I always feel like for being so boxy, the tons of snaps on the sleeves of hospital gowns are weirdly restrictive.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Also, I'm 22 weeks pregnant and was just talking to my husband yesterday about how I need to find a better labor outfit for this baby! :)

    ReplyDelete
  105. I love that it gives full coverage in back while still allowing access for an epidural if desired.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I'm expecting a baby this coming July!

    ReplyDelete
  107. I am expecting in a few more months!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Seems like it would be nice after having the baby, much more comfy and flattering than hospital gowns, for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Love the fabric, I have been trying to find a special
gown as soft...and love the length...and nursing access!

(I think I see the sparkle of a certain "sprockets" in the female model's eye)

"and now we shall dance the hospital johhny dance
we call ain't nothing covering up that flappin fanny"
(I have been thinking about this since last night, forgive me if it's totally lame!)

    ReplyDelete
  110. I'm due in February and I'm a doula here in Sacramento, CA.....I sure wish they offered something like that in the hospitals! What a pain it is to get on the second gown so I can cover a clients backside and not get all caught up in the lines!!

When I see that picture it reminds me of a comment my mom ( who had 5) used to make that in her "world" men and women would switch off being pregnant! Now we can, "simpler twins" lol!

    ReplyDelete
  111. What I like most about the birth gown is that they are attractive looking, and would be very uplifting to the mom's spirits. :)

  116. As an LD nurse and Birthing From Within mentor, I think this gown is WONDERFUL! I frequently talk to moms in class about wearing their own clothes in labor to maintain their sense of identity and control over their own choices. I showed this gown to my manager and she also loved it. She is looking into finding funding to provide these to women in our hospital, but that will probably not be possible until next year.

    ReplyDelete
  117. As a first time expectant mama who is anxious about giving birth (the most private and intimate thing I will ever do) in my workplace, along with whatever colleges happen to be there that day, I think a gown like this would be helpful in giving me a sense of privacy that doesn't make me feel like a "patient" who is under the control and rules of the institution.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I am a midwife expecting my first February 29th. Unfortunately, I am not giving birth at home, but in a large institution. I would love a gown like this because it would allow me to feel more like myself (an individual) rather than a generic patient covered in the same scratchy gown. Also, they took our nursing gowns away 2/2 to cost at the hospital.

    ReplyDelete
  120. wow this is awesome. so pretty and practical. i love that it covers you up but has access where you may need it.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Ohhh.... it's lovely! Let's see. What I like best. I like that it covers. I like that the materials should be easy to wash. I like that it looks classy, but still gets the job done. And the "option 3" colors look wonderful.

We're not pregnant yet, though hopefully that will change soon. I just weaned, however, and I don't think that I'll be expecting by the solstice... unfortunately. A big thank you to you & the creator for the give-away!

    ReplyDelete
  125. How great the someone has designed a practical and pretty birthing gown for moms! I'm a home birthing mama, with my second babe on the way - but this would be wonderful as a post-partum gown at home. ...*would be even better in organic fabric*

    Thanks for the chance!

    ReplyDelete
  126. BEAUTIFUL GOWN! I love the snap feature for nursing and the empire waist with the classy bow! Just looking at it, I want to touch it! It looks amazingly soft and comfortable....not like the hospital gowns! I would definitely wear it before and after labor and delivery.

  134. I just wanted to say that I absolutely LOVE the idea of such a lovely article of clothing. I gave birth to my daughter 5 months ago, and my son 3 years ago. I consider myself a relatively modest person, and my husband is EXTREMELY modest. However, I walked around the hospital room and gave birth to my children completely naked. It was either a hospital gown, or my birthday suit. I went for the more practical (and more comfortable) option. If only I had one of these, I could have felt a little less vulnerable. The nurses kept asking me over and over if I wanted to "put on my gown yet", and most of the time I kept ignoring them. If I wanted to wear the damn gown, it would have been on my body already!

    ReplyDelete
  135. LOVE this. Love the cut and color and the fact that you can feel like a beautiful woman while doing the most crazy womanly thing on earth!! Love it.

  138. I was looking at the gown on the computer when my fiance walked by. He commented on how beautiful it is, and I agree. It is practical, but it doesn't look like medical equipment. So I'm entering even though having a baby is probably still a ways off for me.

    ReplyDelete
  139. I think these gowns are lovely! Feel beautiful and womanly matter in birth... no matter how the hospitals treat it!

What a great product and a very intuitive designer!
