I did it!

I ran a half-marathon this morning. The weather was great: sunny, clear, very little wind, and a bit on the chilly side. Ignore the pink spots on my shirt--I spilled juice on myself during the run.

My deerskin finally arrived (4 pounds of scrap leather) so I made Zari some shoes since she didn't have any and it's been too cold to go barefoot. I used the Chloe Toes pattern. I first made a pair of red shoes in 12-18 month size, but they were too big. So I made 2 more pairs in the 6-12 month size, which fit perfectly: the brown and tan ones below, and a pair of black Mary Jane style shoes.

Zari had bed head this morning.

  3. Thanks for the article Tasha. It's always refreshing to see reports of alternative birth options without the need to pass judgment on whether or not they're "safe."

  10. thats fantastic! You look so happy and you and your baby and your shoes are all just adorable :)

I am really proud of you. I loved to sew but when my machine "jammed" about 3 (4??) years ago I havent gotten it out since. Each toddler made having free time and free space a scarcer commodity. No excuse though-- I wanna sew again. SHOES! How ingenious.

  12. Tabitha,
I have a very finicky Brother that can't handle thick fabrics, but it works fine with the deerskin. If you had cowhide it would probably not work well. I also found that I can't sew the leather shoes with heavy duty thread (jeanstitch thread specifically, like the pattern calls for). My machine threw a fit. So I just used regular Gutermann thread and it worked fine--the thread stitching just doesn't show up as well.

  13. I love the shoes! Where did you get the deerskin to make them? Zari is adorable...we have a lot of bedhead days around here too. For some reason Rosie's hair refuses to lay back down some mornings no matter how much I wet it and comb it.

  14. I just started using my sewing machine two weekends ago to sew leather, and I was surprised at how well my machine handled it. I make leather bound journals, and while I was painfully sewing some leather together by hand, I looked over and decided to give my sewing machine a try.

I have a very basic Brother and used normal thread, and it worked great. I did adjust the tension so it was very loose, but the machine managed quite well. Let me just say that I broke way more needles handsewing (4) than machine sewing (0 so far).

I'm not sure what kind of leather is way, but it was very soft and supple. Probably very similar to deerskin.
