Ear update

We had a followup visit to check on Zari's eardrum, and it is completely healed. She's also gaining weight nicely--a little over 14 pounds now!

I shall procrastinate no longer and get back to work on my dissertation!

  1. I am delighted to hear that Zari is doing better. What did you end up doing after you found out about her eardrum? I hope you never have to deal with something like that again.

Good luck on your dissertation. What do you have to do for it?

  2. We did antibiotic ear drops, which I was okay with. I did NOT want to use oral abx. I would have done other things for a simple infection, but with a rupture you can't put anything into the ear except for the drops.

Dissertation: I am just starting the writing phase. I've been gathering material for ages--interviews, surveys, reading internet discussions about unassisted birth. My goal in writing it is to explain unassisted birth clearly, so that your average mainstream person could read it and have a complete understanding of what UC is and why people do it. It won't be a "how-to" book, or a book about why UC is good--other people have written those. Mine is a more academic approach, looking at the journey that people take to UC, why they choose it, and some of the important issues that UCers raise.

The diss will also have some of my personal narratives between each main chapter. I actually think I'll use some of the essays on this blog for those narrative interludes.

Right now I'm working on a chapter about the historical development of UC, starting in the 1950s with Pat Carter. (If anyone wants a PDF copy of her book "Come Gently, Sweet Lucina," send me your email and I'll email it to you.) Her book is quite an interesting read: spunky, comic, lots of flourishes, and some really outlandish ideas here and there. For example, she advocated strict weight restriction and dieting (5 lbs gain ideally). The chapter will touch on the main UC authors: Marilyn Moran, Lynn Griesemer, Laurie Morgan, & Laura Shanley. I will also describe the different "waves" of UC thought. For example, Marilyn Moran was into "husband-wife childbirth" and felt that couples UCs would solve many of our nation's marital problems. Whereas Pat Carter was more a fan of solo births. I will also set UC history in the context of the natural childbirth and midwifery movements of the 20th century.

Well, I was about to write about the other chapters but that will take too long right now!

    1. Is this offer still good? I used to have a copy of this. I got it from a freebirth/uc birth group, from Mrs. Carter's daughter or granddaughter, who was on the group (google or yahoo, I forget which; it has been a looong time), but over the course of several moves, I seem to have lost it.

  3. Wow! It sounds like it will be a great read. Will this basically be a book when you are finished? I'd love to read that e-book by Pat Carter. Do you have my email, or should I send it again?

  5. I would love to have a copy of that ebook. My email is bellybreastandbaby at verizon dot net.

I found your blog a while back, by way of another blog that I don't remember the name, and have been reading daily since.

Glad to hear Zari's eardrum is better!

  6. Although this is an old post, I saw that you may have a pdf file of Pat Carter's "Come Gently, Sweet Lucina" I am expecting to birth my first child in the next week or 2 at home and another mother suggested reading Carter's work for encouragement (in the midst of family negativity/pressure to conform to the norm)... If there is anyway I could get this from you to read, I would be most appreciative. Thank you so much,
