3 before 33

When I was growing up, I remember planning to be done having children by time I was 30. Maybe 31 or 32 max. Because, you know, being in your 30s is So Old. Yeah.

I knew a woman whose plan was to have Five by Twenty-Five, and she did it. Too ambitious for me.

It's my birthday today, so at least I can say I had Three before Thirty-Three.

The oldest 3 (of 5) in my family

  1. Well Rixa, you have two sisters who are in that boat with you. I always thought I would have most of my kids in my 20s, but seeing as how I just had my first at 29, I am WAY behind schedule! Oh well.

Here's to life plans that turn out differently than expected, but wonderful all the same!

  2. Happy Birthday!

By the time I was in college I knew I would be waiting until my 30s to have children. Having children before then was such a bizarre thought for me. Of course I wasn't married until I was 27 so that probably had something to do with it. I had my first when I was 30 and I'll (probably) have my second when I'm 33.

  3. Happy birthday, Rixa!!

I remember thinking 30 was "too old" to have children. I was 24 when my first was born, and I felt like SUCH a child, so immature and unready to have a baby, even though I really was in a good place; I was just unprepared for how... un-everything being a parent would make me feel. That changed my perspective on what was "too old" and why it was "too old."

I had my 4th when I was 33 and 5th when I was 36, and for both of them, pregnancy, birth, and infancy were substantially better than my first three. It was all joy and relaxation, and I never felt like I was drowning in "I don't know what to do." Perhaps that was the experience more than the actual age. But, having a baby with some maturity under my belt was a great experience.

  4. starting at 22, I had three before my 26th birthday. I can't imagine 5 before I'm 25. wow. just wow.

  5. I had 5 by the time I was 25. I am 32 and expecting my 9th. I can tell you its WAY more difficult to do this in my 30s than it was in my 20s. Physically any way. Parenting hasn't changed much but physically my body is feeling this much more than it ever did.

    Happy Birthday!

  6. A friend of mine had 5 by 25. Her first was born when she was not quite 20.

Mine weren't that close together. I was 26 when my 5th was born, and not yet 28 for my 6th.

  8. My mom had me very young (pregnant at 19, delivered at 20), so growing up, I naturally thought 20 was when you had kids.

Then I got to be about 15 and went WHOOOOOOOA!

Had my first at 29. The second is still just a thought at nearly 31.

  9. I was supposed to have been done by 29 and I thought I had succeeded, and then well, at 32, along came number three ;).

  10. Happy Birthday!

I got pregnant with what will be our second two weeks after I turned 30. We're still not sure if we're going for 3 or 4 but I should be done around 35 at the latest.

I never had a planned end date in mind but since I was a teenager I knew that if I wasn't at least in a relationship that was headed toward marriage by the time I turned 30 I'd just do it on my own. Being a mom was the most important thing to me so I wasn't going to risk losing my fertility to age just because I hadn't met the right guy.

  11. Happy birthday!!

    Let's see...I had 1 at 27, 2 at 28, 3 at 32 and 4 at 34 (and 3 days)! So I think you are right on track :)

  12. Happy Birthday!!!

I definitely thought I'd be done by now, but the best laid plans right? I'm just glad I get to participate. :-)

  13. My sister-in-law is 25 and already has three. She got married very young, however.

I got married when I was 22, and hoped to have a baby before I turned 25. Well, that's probably not going to happen at this point. I'll be 25 at the end of the year, but no baby in sight! But I'm okay with that. I'm still young! Babies will come in the Lord's time.

  16. Happy Birthday, Rixa! It's my daughter's 17th birthday. I didn't think I would be able to have children, and then had 4 in 4 1/2 years. I started at 26 and was done by 31.

  17. Happy birthday!

I also grew up thinking I'd be done by 30 (or at least most of the way there) but I'll be turning 29 this year and we're definitely not done yet! I have a friend who (a few years ago) celebrated her 30th birthday, her 10th wedding anniversary, and had her 5th child all in the same year- crazy!

  18. Happy birthday, Rixa! Aren't you glad you're not in finals right now? :)

I wanted 4 kids, and I figured I'd be finished by the time I turned 30. Well, I had my first at 1 1/2 months shy of 22 and my fourth (and last) at 30 years, one month, and 1 day, so I think that still counts. Turning 30 really wasn't a very big deal, though, since I had this other birthday approaching in the future. :)

By the way, have you seen any of the recent Harry Potter movies? Every time I see Fleur Delacour, I am reminded of you. She looks so similar to how I remember you looking in college.

  20. I gave birth to my son, 2 months after I turned 20, and one month after our 1 wedding anniversary.
I will turn 24 a month to a month and a half after this baby is born. We plan on 3 more, 5 altogether. DH wanted to have all of them before I turned 30 (I don't really care how old I am, I just don't want my kids to far apart in age), but because finances made us wait so long to have this, our second, baby I will probably be closer to 33-35 before we are done.

  21. I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but why is it that 5 children seems to be the magic number for LDS families?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ha! Maybe it's because you can still fit 5 kids into a minivan? We had 5 kids in my family and that seems like just the right size to me.

  23. My plan was to have 1 or 2 babies by 30. Well, I just had my first 2 weeks ago and I will be 34 in June! I bit off schedule - now that I think about it, if I would have had babies sooner, I would have never discovered the possibility of having a home birth! So just that in itself was worth the wait!

  24. Yesterday was my 33rd birthday... that means you were born just one day before I was. Happy Birthday!

We have two little ones, and think we'll add at least one more to the mix before calling it quits. We'll see what God plans for our family.

Thanks for all you share on your blog. It's an inspiration!

  25. I have heard that there is something in the Mormon lore saying that 5 children is a good way into heaven or some such...Is that true? A Mormon friend told me that growing up. She always wanted 5 children and that was one of the reasons.

  26. I've been LDS my whole life & never heard the "lore" that ann. posted. But, my grandmother's personal philosophy was that every mother (as long as she's not abusive) gets automatic entrance to heaven. It is such a sacrifice to have even one.
I agree it is a sacrifice, but holding your baby is a piece of heaven on earth. Why wait for heaven when you can hold a little angel right here? Sarah would agree that's worth waiting 100 years for. Even better if you get to hold more than one precious child & if your wait is shorter than a century!

  27. I planned on having all of my kids before 30 as well but I just had my first and I am 28. Funny how live changes and doesn't go the way we originally planned.
