The (unnamed) carrier is done

I haven't named my soft structured carrier yet (referred to as a SSC in babywearing circles), but here are a few pictures. It's very similar to a Yamo or an Ergo, minus the head supports. The body has darts in the seat area. The waistband is a high-density foam curved to fit a woman's hips. The shoulder straps are heavily padded and have a front chest buckle, much like a hiking backpack.

I think I will make a few changes to the design now that I've worn it a bit:
  • make the body taller and a bit wider
  • insert the shoulder straps longer (and the strapping shorter) so the padded part is longer
  • insert the webbing higher up on the side of the body piece
I am thinking of making a pattern for the SSC so that other DIYers don't have to make all of the same mistakes and do-overs that I did! If I could find a way to print it up to scale, I could even sell the patterns...

  1. Wow, it looks great! Very professional! :) Nice work...and a pattern would be great for DIYers. Are you still going to try slip covers too?

  2. I'd certainly like a pattern. That looks great for after the baby isn't as interested in the sling approach. Just a question... how many carriers/slings/pouches/etc do you have now? Sounds like you are all set. :)

  3. Yes, it would be easy to do slip covers with this. I don't think I'd use a sleeping hood/head support, but it would be easy to include instructions for one in the pattern (removable or permanent).

I have 2 ring slings, 1 pouch, 1 mei tai (the fauxhawk), and this new SSC. I want to make another SSC with the changes I mentioned and see how I like the feel of it.

Jen, I think you still have me beat on the number of carriers! LOL

  4. This looks so nice and really comfortable. If you do make a pattern I would be interested in one. My (25lb!) 8 month old is getting too heavy to carry on my hip.

  5. Wow! That's a hefty 8 month old!!!

I am trying to figure out how to:
    - print the pattern on large sheets of paper
    - draw the pattern on a computer program (which program? how do I do it? etc...)
    - make the pattern into a PDF that you can print and tape together at home (would be nice for people outside North America to save on shipping costs, but the downside is that people could illegally share it, although babywearers tend to be an honest bunch)

  6. It looks great! Very pretty. Will you be selling these already made as well as the pattens?

  7. I will probably sell custom orders, but I don't have time right now to make lots up ahead of time.

I like the idea of selling a pattern, and I could include instructions on how to modify it, add or subtract various options, etc so the person can make a variety of styles.

  8. Shh...don't think about the patapum and the BBO MT I just got...it's a secret! LOL. Anyway, here are some directions on making a pdf. Not sure if it's useful to you or not, but a thread on tbw pointed somebody this direction for sharing her pattern...http://www.burdastyle.com/howto/show/143

  9. Jen, that's quite helpful--thanks. What I'd really like is pattern drafting software...mmmm...but it's expensive.
