Good news & bad news

Bad news first:

Zari has a ruptured eardrum. Well, technically the doctor couldn't see the eardrum because her ear was so full of discharge. But she said that based on how much gunk there was, it had most likely ruptured. She prescribed antibiotic eardrops, which I am okay with using. She initially suggested oral abx, because there aren't many drops approved for infants under 6 months, but I told her I didn't want to do that unless it was very very serious. So I am hoping that the drops work to clear up the infection.

Good news: Zari weighs 13 lbs 6 oz. It's right about what I had guessed based on our very cheap bathroom scale.

  1. I am so sorry to hear that. I hope the drops, and the oil if you decide to use it, will help. I sometimes wished that my children could just use their voices for a moment to tell me what was wrong or what hurt. I hope she is doing better quickly.

  2. I'm so sorry...of course I'm glad you caught it though. Hopefully between the abx drops, oil, and breastmilk (?) she'll be back to her sweet smiley self very soon. Ear infections suck.

  3. I hope it will heal soon. I'm not supposed to put anything but the antibiotic drops in, because you don't want to introduce other stuff into the ear with a hole in the eardrum. It's hard for her to nurse on the one side because it puts pressure on her hurt ear. She'll nurse, then as soon as she's done she'll pop off and scream. So sad.

  4. When my babies had ear problems they would usually nurse fine on one side. Then on the other side (the one that hurt to nurse on) I would breastfeed using the football hold. They were much more comfy that way.

    Good luck!

  7. Rixa, I'm glad that the doctor was able to help. As one who has had a bad ear infection while an adult, I can attest to the fact that it REALLY hurts but the ear drops are miracles! My ears were so infected that they completely closed up. It was terrible, but the drops took care of it quickly.

Give Zari lots of kisses for me!

  9. Zari seems much better. She has lots of crusty gunk coming out of her ear, but she is back to her normal happy self. She'll be on the drops until this Friday, and in another week we'll take her back in to check on her eardrum.

  10. Hi Rixa, with my younger son i had lots of ears problems. One of the things i noticed was that they came along with the teeths outing. And my doctor adviced to take much care in the bath so no water go in. I bought swimming tampoons for the ears to prevent the entrance of water and things go much better.

    Good luck for your baby.
