A thrifty crafty weekend

Yesterday was super fun because it's Halloween season...and that means costume making! Inga wants to be Inej and Dio wants to be Kaz (both characters from Shadow and Bone).

We went to a thrift store yesterday morning and chanced upon their big sale, where all clothes are $0.75! We scored so many good things for both of their costumes, both clothes, shoes, fabric, and various accessories.

When we came home, Zari tried on a long black wool overcoat (bought originally to cut into pieces and re-use for something else). But it fit her as if it had been custom made...and we had the idea that she could dress up as another character from Shadow and Bone: the Darkling (the big bad evil villain).

With some ornamentation, I could turn that coat into a kefta. She may very well keep this coat for herself. She looks very intimidating and dramatic in it. It goes to mid-calf.

We took a few more trips to other thrift stores, including a family trip to Goodwill, but nothing compared to the amazing finds in the morning.

I spent much of today sewing...and we finished Season 2 of Shadow and Bone right before bedtime. It was fun but also frustrating because some of the story lines deviated completely from the books (sure, they need mateiral for season 3...but at the expense of just changing the ending of the first series of books).

I'm having lots of fun trying to figure out how to re-create these costumes with thrifted or repurposed items. For example, Inga hunted through a basket of silverware to find several butter knives with ornate handles. Now she has her set of knives! (Inej carries something like 15 knives on her body).
